I'm Jim, a long time user of wings but couldn't program to save myself. I'm an Aussie, and enjoy long walks on the beach yada yada yada. Righto. We use wings as a modeller for our CNC machine. NO JOKES! The absolute scales are damn spot on, well done whoever did that. What we would would REALLY REALLY LIKE!!! Is a plugin that allows us to extrude the root face of our wing, or the vertices, through the body of the fuselage and have it cut a hole, of equal shape to the wing... perhaps even put the entire wing inside the fuselage and click "Cut profile" so the fuselage now has the exact shape of the wing/object or whatever cut through it that the object would take up, adding whatever vertex points the fuselage needs as it goes. Wow is that easy to understand? You could use the same method for tubes and all kinds of things too. This would benifit us CNC's a huge amount! Wings is the most user friendly cad program bar none, I love it! I spent days trying to do it and have no idea what to do now. If anyone can help please either drop me a line or reply on this. Right now, I'm using a program that will simply take the 2D DXF file to drill straight down after the side of the fuselage has been cut. It presents the problem of only being able to cut a straight profile, and the line up is really hit and miss after the fuse has been cut, its not accurate enough to hit and miss all the time. It also means the wing roots are always straight, which isn't so bad, but I'd like to have it tapering into the fuselage at the angle of sweep occassionally too. I make jet engines, and want to use wings to start prototyping some model AC (About 4.5 to 6 feet long) that we can put some engines on, to start collecting data for it. (One day I hope to prototype UAV's and such... ) But i need a fast way of putting the right hole in the fuse. Heres the simpliest pic i've got to explain, of a simple cylindrical fuselage, nothing fancy, and a Naca 2411 wing profile to show you what I mean. I'd LOVE it for that wing profile to be cut nicely into the fuselage, if the wing root is straight, the wings as whole unit will simply slide in, if its tapered, i'll mill the top and bottom and sandwich them in (Preffered). The CNC would recognise it as just a "hole", and cut it first go spot on. Then, wings could fullfill my every desire. Any help, suggestions, whater, is hugely appreciated. P.s : Puzzledpaul: One day, I'll cnc all the parts to a full on ultralight. Then construct it out of fiberglass or carbon fiber...it will be powered by one or even too, rather large jets of mine

(04/09/08 01:09:16) Registered Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Well, as optigon said ... you're after a booleans feature ... which (I suspect) is unlikely to come along in the near future (for various reasons) However - when I've made a/c models in wings, the fuselage and wings have been one object - rather than separate ones as shown in your pics. This 'forces' the geom around the wing root to share the (line of intersection) geom to a much greater extent than when just poking one object into the other. Have you tried doing something like the above? Decide which of the 2 objects needs the relevant No of edges to correctly define its shape (I suspect the wing x section) ... then offer this up to the (initial) fuselage model and then adjust / add / subtract / slide etc the fuselage x-sectional edgeloops around so that they align with those on the (correctly formed) wing. It should then be possible to join the wing to the fus, using the bridge command (I know you don't wanna do that - but it's an indication that things are as they should be ... imo) As it is at the moment (as shown in your pics) ... none of the relevant geom 'lines up' ... so, even if a boolean command did exist - then it'd have to construct new geom to achieve points of intersection ... and in all probability, end up with some really messy geom. No problems doing it 'the other way round', btw ... ie make the fus first, then align your wing x-section reference image to the correct location on the fus - and ... using something like Tools \| Connect (in ortho mode) ... 'trace' around the ref image onto the fus geometry. If you don't have geom that aligns, then you'll have to use a boolean workaround type workflow ... as per on the booleans page here www.puzzledpaul.com . The wing / fus intersection on the cartoon a/c on this front page was done in a manner as described, btw hth pp

Any dimensions to which you model would be altered with the first iteration of "Smooth". This is fine for "art" but not for "engineering". Although I love Wings, and use it for just about everything 3D, I would be very hesitant to use it to build something that could be dangerous if something goes awry. I know ppaul has used it for mechanical design work in the past, but I doubt that it was for anything that would require, at least at some point, rather heavy dimensional documentation as would a jet-powered UAV design if you ever want to send its manufacture out for bids, apply for a patent, or a gov't contract. Personally, I think your goals would be better served if you looked for a low-cost solid modelling application (Alibre comes to mind). I'm not knocking Wings as it is a great design conceptualization tool, but the tools you are looking for to ease your process are a de facto part of any solid modeling CAD package along with built-in fully configureable dimensional constraints. Not to mention that most CNC machines support basic solids directly, and, if/when you get 'round to building that manned flying machine, direct support for FEA software as well. (I'd certainly like to know that the part design that I'll will be strapping both my body and a jet onto can withstand the various stresses PRIOR to doing so!!!)

Working with a v. low res mesh means that you've essentially got no control over the way it smoothes - in a situation where accuracy is important. The fact that actual real-world birds are involved + the mention of a naca wing profile (in 2nd post) takes away the 'if it looks ok, it'll do' aspect - as I read it, anyway I suspect that the wing profile (thin, high aspect ratio ellipse) on yc's smoothed model wouldn't even be close to what's required here, from an aerodynamic pov. But there will of course be a compromise basic mesh density that allows for easier workflow ... and provides end results that are sufficiently accurate for the job in hand pp Edit Ahhh... wonders of x posting All valid points by R13 ... but with one minor proviso from the days when I used to fly r/c models ... 'if it's got enough power, then just about anything will fly' ... and so we had then (probably still do) flying wheelbarrow shapes, loo seats etc etc. From a modelling pov for just personal use, I'd prob be fairly ok with the results from cnc cut wing ribs etc ... but with the data obtained from a basic unsmoothed mesh - not from smoothed / 'uncontrolled' files. At the end of the day, cutting several dozen 'identical' wing ribs, by hand - in balsa, with scalpel ... using a template isn't as exact as it could be ... let alone cutting'em individually from the plans From the few other apps I've used ... then rhino comes to mind - for this sort of thing. (Well, I recognise my model exagerate low-res, but thats for the demo purpose…) Edit: And no need to be aware of square faces as C-C algo do square in final. Glad to see i've got you guys thinking. Just so you know i have a variety of cad programs, the only issue with crap like solidworks is if you get some new data on a certain part of the airframe, nacelles, any tiny random !$@%, to modify it is a total power drill to the eye socket. Wings makes not only conceptualising (Us aussies spell "zing" words with an "S" too) very easy, it does make my part turn around very fast. Great stuff fellas.

(04/15/08 00:39:01) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Ok I have tried looking for a hyper-wings patch or something for this cumull-clark, or is cutmullclark simply the smoothing operation in built? I did find a solution to the issue for now, but I don't want anyone to get upset! Anyway here it is. I export the entire plane, done as is to the correct dims, then export it to 3dsmax. I then use its boolean operations to cut holes in everything I want. Now I can send it to the CNC straight from there. Still 99% of it is done on wings, and I can see this system working well until on day you guys steal...cough uhum... i mean, do a similar thing that 3ds does, considering they basically took wings, beefed it up on steroids then commercialized it...with the shittiest interface ever...the bastards. Its almost impossible to modify an object without clicking undo 50 times till you get the desired result, wings is surely the go, i'll just boolean my crap in 3ds. Peace out dudes. P.s: your plane kicks ass man, i don't know why my screen looks nothing like any of yours, I must me missing some kind of killer pluging, links anyone?

Sometimes, its good to jump in another app, for booleans or other, and return to Wings3D to finish… Final result is most important and Wings3D cannot do anything. But considere planning the work (sheet of paper and pen) is very important; think the entire plane, model then cut wings along prepared loop. Remember: boolean is often the short way to spend hours of corrections.
