How do you do a Radial Scale (Y) to a non-default point |

OK. I am a relatively new Wings user, and as I was doing a tutorial, I came across the operation of scaling an edge Radialy (Y axis) to a non-deafault point(a
point that the user specifies). How do you do this?? Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks.

welcome to wings
User defined vector ops are only accessible with Advanced Menus turned on. You can turn them on in Edit|Preferences|Advanced With advanced menus on you'll want to keep an eye on the Information Line across the bottom of your screen. There you will see mouse button prompts (L, M, R) which let you access the more advanced functions of the wings tool set. Simply hover over the menu items to see what the tool can do. With advanced menus on, you'll be able to figure out how to scale from a point. Just keep an eye on the info line optigon |

Ummm... one more question(the Advanced menus worked great by the way). I see in a tut that you can make ( and it tells you to) "controll" edges, but
whenever I try to slide the edge as it tells you to, the original edge slides...I think I need to duplicate the edge somehow, but i dont see that as an option
on my info bar. ( the tut comes up first as "Wings 3d tutorials Box" on google. My question is concerned with the step after you add edges to the
Radialy scaled(Z) front left wheel...if you want to see what im talking about)...Thanks again!

yep, you're right. You do have to make the edges first before you Slide them:)
There are lots of ways to do this. One is to select an "edge ring" ( looks like this -> | | | | | | | | ), and Connect them. When you Connect the you'll have an "edge loop". Will look like this -> |-|-|-|-|-|-| You can then Bevel the edge loop, which will split it in two. Deselect (Spacebar) Then in edge mode select one segment of one of the edge loops you just made, and hit L to select the whole loop. Then use you can use Slide like it says in the tut. Hope that helps One thing though.. this sort of thread belongs in the Q&A section of the forum. It will probably be moved there soon optigon |

Another ... if an eloop in the correct place already exists, and you want to place another nearby - is to Edge | Bevel > 0 that eloop (hold down shift to
constrain to zero), then slide the new one as required, leaving the original one in place. As regards selecting the correct eloop (of the 2 now
'overlapping' ones) ... because each will only slide one of 2 opposite directions. Hover (in edge mode) to the side of the way you wanna slide, until
an edge is highlighted, hit L ... and slide. In very difficult situtions, select a face on the appropriate side > E for edge mode, de-select unwanted edges,
leaving the one required ... then as before.
pp edit Doing the 'slide shuffle' with edges created using connect (as per O's post) is also very useful. Create new eloop using connect Slide it, Relative > 100% in required direction ... now takes shape of target eloop Press D to re-start slide op Press 1 to change to Absolute mode Drag as required ... this will place the new eloop parallel to the target one.

Thanks guys!! This is all really helpful, but my never-resting mind has conjured up yet another question:should you keep Advanced menus on all the time, or
should you use it only when needed. I would expect to keep it on all the time but Im not sure... Also, as I see in puzzledpaul's tut on a bicycle wheel you
start with diamond shaped faces on the inner rim. Is there a way to make these quickly, or is it a process?? Once again thank you guys a lot for answering my
Q's.

One more Q. What programs do you suggest to use for renders (Wings OpenGL renders really stink!). Im experianced in Bryce and so I tried to dowload it (twice
actually) but it didnt work. My budget right now is on the closer side to zero (spent all money on vid games) so I was looking for something dowloadable. One
of my friends got Bryce6 so I going to try to get that eventually, but at the time being I can only make a project on Wings and leave it flat grey... I think
they deserve better ( even though they arent that good) so any suggestions would be great!

For rendering I recommend you check out Kerkythea. It is free and avariant has created a great plug-in that will let you export your scenes to Kerkythea. There
is a link to it in the plug-ins section.
Keep Advanced menus on all the time... oort |

Cool. Thanks. Ill try Kerkythea, and that diamond bevel thing explains a lot. Oh, and puzzledpaul, I just did your 2D to 3D tut and i thought it was really
good!

Wow. First, the tut was good. It had the same basic concept as the others. And i read the thread. That bit you threw in about the wages was great (did it come
with step by step illustrations?). Im moving on to more of your tuts now. Thanks!

profile) Doing more tuts now. PK

OK. PP, I was doing your bike wheel tut and when I was loop cutting the edge loop on the mirrored inner hub, my hotkeys were disabled. Its not that they didnt
work, they were just doing something other than what they were supposed to do...For example when I grabbed an edge on the mirrored inner hub and hit L,
intending to select the edge loop, instead it selected every FACE on the inner hub, and spokes. Yes, it even changed me from edge mode to face mode. Did I do
something wrong? It was working fine untill then...Also, I saw on some tut to go into Orthographic View for something. What is Ortho view and what purpose does
it serve?? PK

You got caps lock on?
Ortho mode is a parallel projection mode - no perspective ... ideal for all sorts of things where you want to see true shapes, precise/ correct lengths and inter-relationships etc. Viewing xyz ortho is essentially the same as looking at a set of blueprints / engineering drawings etc. pp |

OK. in a tut you need to "store" a part of an object...how do you do this???Thanks.PK

Either referring to File | Save Selected ... | ||

Either referring to File | Save Selected ... or ... if it's one of my tuts, Selection | Store Selection This, together with Recall Selection are well worth hotkeying (imo) if you're going to use them a lot (see help for how to hotkey, btw) You can store 4 different types of selections (one for each mode) ... and you must be in the correct mode for the one you want to recall. ie if you've stored a face and edge seln ... and you only want to recall the edge one ... and you're in a mode other than edge, you'll have to enter edge mode first. pp |
