Is there going to be any benefits to downloading the newer version of erlang once the new wings release is out? Will it give any spead increases or will wings be using any new erlang related features?

No, I don't think there is any benefit in upgrading to the OTP R8B-1. It only contains bug fixes (none of them important for Wings).
