Inspired by PuzzledPaul's idea in Gripes & Grumbles, I have now changed how you exit the secondary mode (a.k.a. vector selection mode).
To exit and execute the command, simply right-click. If you need to go ahead to select a point (for instance, after the axis selection for the Rotate command) or Magnet, hold the Alt key while right-clicking.
Sorry for the re-learning I am causing, but the new way really feels better after having tried it for a while.
(For users of Maya camera mode: Hold Ctrl instead of Alt while right-clicking. This is shown in the help prompt in the status line.)
