Cause: While doing an OpenGL render with shadows on premium setting, a dialogue from another program (specifically a yahoo buddy is online dialogue) popped up. Menus had gone blank. Closed the program and reopened. Everything is fine except the main button bar had completely disappeared.

I am running Wings3D on SGI IRIX 6.5.
When I start up Wings3D, I get a message similar to this:

It looks like glXChooseVisual() is taking some default values and giving a decent visual. To overcome this problem a simple measure can be taken:

Only make renders of power of 2. Like 256*256 or 512*512.

This way the preview will look the same as the actual render (*.tga for instance).

If everything still looks bad you should go into your gfx card options and check whether you have set your texture quality to the highest.

Wings3d.exe uses the .beam files located in the following folder:
...\wings3d\lib\wings-"version number"

Through some strange linking from wings3d.exe, the older version-folder might be used. This will result in running that older version of wings3d.
